Kerala rains: Kochi airport closed till Sunday after heavy rains”

By Thursday night, thousands of people were shifted to more than 100 relief camps operational all over the state.

Cochin Airport Authority Limited announced today (09) that all aircraft operations suspended at Kochi airport till 3 pm on Sunday, SriLankan Airlines said in a release. Officials said that the storm water has not entered the airport buildings or the terminal like that happened during last year's floods. Those floods, dubbed the worst to hit the state in almost a century, caused billions of dollars of damage to fields, homes and other infrastructure. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met with officials of the State Disaster Management Authority at their control room to oversee coordination of relief and rescue operations on Thursday. Around 150 are feared to be trapped under the debris, while 200 have been injured.

Kerala received 155 mm (6.1 inches) of rain on Friday, ten times more than average, weather department data showed.

The neighboring state of Karnataka, and Maharashtra in the west have also been hit by heavy rains and flooding.

At least 11 people have been killed so far in rain-related incidents. Officials have advised fishermen not to venture into these areas during the period.

Supplies of milk and vegetables to Mumbai dropped significantly on Friday because numerous affected districts in Maharashtra are major suppliers. Schools and colleges are shut in all 14 districts of the southern state on Friday, except state capital Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. The Central Water Commission said the water level in some rivers has risen to a risky point.
