United Kingdom mulls fast-track visa to attract top scientists

United Kingdom mulls fast-track visa to attract top scientists”

The advisers received an email on Thursday from Boris Johnson's chief of staff Edward Lister saying that they can not take any holiday until after the date that Britain is due to leave the European Union due to "serious work to be done", it was reported yesterday.

Special advisers were emailed by Johnson's senior adviser Edward Lister on Thursday night, saying there was "some confusion about taking holiday" and told none should be booked until 31 October, with compensation considered "on a case by case basis" for those who had already booked leave, though the email said advisors were free to spend their weekends "as you wish".

"We are going to leave the European Union on October 31, which is what the people of this country voted for, it's what MPs voted for, and that's what I think parliamentarians of this country should get on and do", he said.

"I am confident that if that is what it comes to, we will not just get through it, the United Kingdom will end up stronger and more resilient".

"More importantly, I think it would be very damaging to the stability of this country".

Mr Umunna's comments come as Jeremy Corbyn has called on Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill to rule that Boris Johnson can not go ahead with a no-deal Brexit if there is a general election.

According to reports Mr Johnson could try to hang on to make sure Britain leaves the European Union before going to the polls if he is defeated in a vote of confidence when MPs return in September.

It comes after it emerged on Thursday that the Tory government is preparing to call an election "days after" the Brexit deadline date of October 31 - if a majority of UK MPs vote no-confidence in his administration, according to the Financial Times. By convention, governments are not supposed to make any major policy decisions during election periods.

Mr Corbyn asked Sir Mark to confirm that if the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union without a deal while an election is under way, the Government should seek another time-limited extension to the Article 50 withdrawal process to allow the voters to decide.

A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said Sir Mark would respond to Mr Corbyn's letter "in due course".
