Whoops: Android Q Easter Egg Found on Essential Phone, Not Pixels

We're confident it'll be there for all devices running Android Q once the stable version is out, but we'll keep an eye out for any confirmation on that.

Like the iPhone X and newer, Android Q is adopting a single bar located in the center of the home screen that lets users swipe up to access opened apps.

The Easter Egg on Android Q is a two-tone screen featuring a background of diagonal lines overlaid with the stylized Android logo and the number 10 (while we've called this build Android Q, it shouldn't be forgotten that this is actually Android 10). The gesture navigation system is the biggest change to the UX in recent times, as they fundamentally alter how users would be navigating across the OS.

Put simply, users will be able to open the drawer by peeking the drawer, and then swiping. This was a tough choice but given the prolific use of back we optimized for what worked best there. "However, all these paths led to users pulling in the drawer when they were trying to go Back and having less confidence that Back would work". Google on Wednesday released the latest Android Q beta as it prepares to roll out the final release.

In the end Android is still about choice and the 3-button navigation system will remain on-board but it will not be the default system navigation system. The sensitivity preference can be found by going to Settings System Gestures System navigation. Seemingly small user interface (UI) changes are hard, but they become big when they affect over a billion people who rely on their Android phones to communicate and do business online.

Swipe down and tap on About phone. It also admitted that gestures can interfere with the way people navigate the app. Google also revealed that Android users love the Back button and is used 50% more than the Home button.

They did their research over how Android users use their phones to best determine how to provide the best experience for an overwhelming majority of Android users. This decision is being in conjunction with Google's efforts to standardize the navigation experience with partners like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, HMD Global, OnePlus, LG, Motorola, and others. The developer can use these to prepare their apps for the final Android Q rollout.

The take-home message: it might take a few days (Google suggests up to three), but once you're used to the new navigation, your life will be easier.
