Attorney general ‘appalled’ over Epstein’s death, announces investigation”

An FBI investigation has also been opened, and Attorney General William Barr later announced a Justice Department probe into Epstein's death, which he also called an "apparent suicide". The facility now houses 763 male offenders.

"The reckoning of accountability begun by the voices of fearless and truthful victims should not end with Jeffrey Epstein's cowardly and shameful suicide", said Sigrid McCawley, attorney for Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who has claimed that Epstein kept her as a teenage "sex slave".

The Justice Department is reviewing the process that led to Epstein's 2008 plea bargain.

The Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman described in his statement that Epstein's death was "disturbing" while acknowledging that his death would present "another hurdle to giving Epstein's many victims their day in Court".

After Epstein was placed on suicide watch when he was found with marks on his neck on July 23, daily psychological assessments were conducted on him, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Scarborough also tweeted that there are Republicans and Democrats "and a Harvard professor or two" who would be relieved that Epstein's death ends the case against him. "With the obvious end to criminal proceedings against Epstein, it is important that the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform begin its investigation immediately", said Rep. Lois Frankel.

Epstein may have attempted suicide in July.

"What does the word watch mean in the phrase suicide Watch?"

Lawyer Brad Edwards, who has represented other Epstein accusers, said Epstein's death had seen him avoid being held responsible.

Last month, Alex Acosta resigned as U.S. labour secretary over his role in negotiating the plea deal with Epstein.

Thousands of records were unsealed Friday in one of the cases surrounding Epstein's alleged sex ring.

Jennifer Araoz, 32, who claimed that Epstein raped her when she was 15, called on authorities to "pursue and prosecute his accomplices and enablers". That investigation will continue despite Epstein's death, according to FDLE.

Other accusers and their lawyers reacted to the news with frustration that the financier won't have to face them in court.

"We have to live with the scars of his actions for the rest of our lives, while he will never face the consequences of the crimes he committed, the pain and trauma he caused so many people".

Brad Edwards, a Florida lawyer for almost two dozen other accusers, said that "this is not the ending anyone was looking for". Acosta signed off on a lenient plea deal with Epstein that allowed him to resolve the earlier charges by serving 13 months in a county jail and registering as a sex offender.

Federal prosecutors in NY reopened the probe after investigative reporting by The Miami Herald stirred outrage over that plea bargain. Epstein previously was convicted in Florida of two counts of soliciting prostitution, one of them with a minor.

Before his legal troubles, Epstein led a life of extraordinary luxury that drew powerful people into his orbit.

According to reports, he was treated at a nearby hospital before being returned to New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center.
