El Paso crowd decries racism week after mass shooting

El Paso crowd decries racism week after mass shooting”

The suspect accused of killing 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, has confessed that he was targeting "Mexicans", say USA media.

Authorities believe Crusius posted a racist online screed that railed against an influx of Hispanics into the USA shortly before the attack.

Crusius later waived his Miranda Rights and agreed to speak with detectives, telling them that he had driven to El Paso from the Dallas suburb of Allen - which is where he lived and is a more than 10-hour drive from El Paso - and that he was targeting Mexicans in the attack.

The attack came hours before another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, in which nine people were killed.

The newspaper said it obtained an arrest warrant affidavit in which police also said the suspect, Patrick Crusius, 21, confessed to carrying out the shooting rampage. The detective noted that Crusius said his targets were "Mexicans". Police filed an affidavit Friday detailing the arrest. They then saw a man - identified as Patrick Crusius, the 21-year-old charged with capital murder in the case - get out of the auto with his hands in the air, the affidavit said.

Twenty-two people were killed in the attack and about two dozen others were wounded.

Police took Crusius into custody after they responded to reports of a shooting and saw a vehicle stopped at an intersection near the El Paso store.

The massacre in the predominantly Hispanic city of El Paso is being investigated as a hate crime and act of domestic terrorism, authorities said.

Federal authorities have said they're treating the shooting as a case of domestic terrorism.

Crusius claimed he targeted El Paso because, in part, he wanted distance between target and his hometown on the other side of Texas, three sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

"I love you, El Paso", she said, her voice cracking. O'Rourke, who is from El Paso, has blamed President Donald Trump's rhetoric for spreading fear and hate, leading Trump to tweet that O'Rourke should "be quiet".
