Four Things We Learned from Day 6 of the Rogers Cup

Four Things We Learned from Day 6 of the Rogers Cup”

After watching her final backhand zip bast Sofia Kenin for a victor to end their 2019 Rogers Cup semifinal, Bianca Andreescu covered her face and fell to the court, all the tension of the match suddenly dissipating.

Andreescu, who has dealt with several injury setbacks in her young career, looked to be in trouble when she gingerly returned to the court from a medical timeout late in the second set with her right thigh heavily taped and her movement hampered.

Kenin got a point back, but Andreescu's backhand victor sealed the match and brought the Canadian to her knees.

Bianca Andreescu and Serena Williams meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Rogers Open.

Pliskova's chances of replacing Australian Ash Barty, who lost here in the second round, atop the world rankings are over and Japan's Naomi Osaka, who plays later on Thursday, will move back into first spot.

The 19-year-old from nearby Mississauga, Ont., held on for a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Sofia Kenin of the United States on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's win was Andreescu's first match this week that did not go three sets.

Bouzkova's week included wins over 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens, former French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko and a clash with Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, who retired hurt after dropping the first set of their quarter-final.

Backed by a vocal sellout crowd, Andreescu beat Kenin on her fifth match point, avoiding a third set for the first time in the tournament. She has been on the court more than any other player at this year's Rogers Cup at 10 hours 54 minutes.

Andreescu finally sealed the match on a backhand victor.

I'll take Serena to win her first title in more than two years, but I don't love it.

Andreescu is the first Canadian woman to reach the final of the tournament since 1969 when Vicki Berner defeated compatriot Faye Urban.

"She just did everything well, she had a really good game plan and she was moving great", said Williams. "So just being able to be here right now is truly incredible".

"It's not easy, that's for sure", said Andreescu, who was still shivering from a lengthy ice bath as part of the treatment on her groin.

"I don't play in those kind of conditions, so it's not like I can practice, " Kenin said. But when I go out there, like I said, I'm fearless.

In two lengthy games to start the third set, Andreescu continued to struggle with obvious pain in her legs, grimacing after lengthy rallies forced her to sprint all over the court.

After kissing the hard court Andreescu lay on her back, crying and covering her face.
