Iran: 'Disastrous consequences' if Israel intervenes in Gulf”

Iran "won't hesitate to safeguard its security", the minister added.

During the past several months, Iran has seized several oil tankers near the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz, in addition to being accused of sabotaging a number of other vessels.

On Monday, the United Kingdom said it will form a joint maritime task-force with the U.S. to protect merchant vessels in the Gulf.

In a statement, Mousavi said Iran would view any support offered by Israel as a "clear threat to its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and a crisis-provoking and destabilising element" in the region.

On Thursday, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami said the recent US plan to establish a maritime coalition force for escorting ships would not bring security to the Gulf.

The friction is rooted in US President Donald Trump's decision in May previous year to unilaterally withdraw Washington from a landmark nuclear deal signed in 2015 between world powers and Iran.

Just days later, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed maritime security, Iran and Yemen with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a phone call on Wednesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Washington is anxious about being defeated by Tehran in the diplomatic arena.

Late July, Manama also hosted a major global meeting during which military representatives for the US, Britain, Bahrain and other countries discussed the possibility of forming a military coalition to protect navigation in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

He then stressed Iran's serious resolve to deepen bilateral cooperation with Nicaragua in various fields, including trade, industry, energy, agriculture and finance.

The senior Iranian diplomat dismissed the United States move, saying that being designated by the United States would not affect him since he has ho properties outside Iran.

"The security of regional countries is inseparable and it is not possible for some to be secure at the cost of others' insecurity".

Iran's UN ambassador, Majid Ravanchi, protested in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and urged him to "play your active role in preserving the integrity of the United Nations in line with your responsibility to counter the current risky trend".

Mousavi further noted that Iran considers the presence of non-regional forces in the Persian Gulf, regardless of their goal, will lead to tensions.

"Security of the region is a common concern of Iran and the Gulf neighbors".

"Some U.S. allies in the region were encouraging America to wage war, but they realized that the war with Iran would threaten their political systems, so they were silent", Salami said during a speech Thursday in the western city of Kermanshah.
