Israeli forces attack Palestinian worshippers in Al-Aqsa

Israeli forces attack Palestinian worshippers in Al-Aqsa”

Israeli police have fired tear gas, rubber bullets and sound grenades to clear Palestinian worshippers from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem following a standoff at one of the gates to the site.

The terror group cancelled this Friday's protest because of the upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Tensions had mounted at the flashpoint complex at the start of Eid al-Adha as the holiday overlapped this year with the Jewish fast day of Tisha B'Av, amid calls by Jewish nationalist and religious politicians for Jews to visit the holy compound.

Al Jazeera speaks to Rami Khouri, professor of Journalism at the American University of Beirut, who joins us live from Beirut.

It has always been a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In a statement, police said they had deployed forces at the site in anticipation of disturbances and "dispersed rioters".

Clashes erupted as dozens of Zionist settlers, backed by Israeli occupation forces arrive at the holy site, also known as Al Haram Al Sharif, in the Old City of Al-Quds. Jews were also observing the Ninth of Av on Sunday, a day of fasting and mourning for the destruction of the two Biblical temples that stood at the site in antiquity. It put the number of Muslim worshippers at the site at some 60,000. The Jewish visitors left the compound shortly thereafter.

Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there to avoid provoking tensions.

The compound is in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 war along with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, territories the Palestinians claim as a future state.

The Israeli army said troops had killed a Palestinian gunman in a separate incident on Sunday after he opened fire on them from across the perimeter fence around the Gaza Strip.
