Palestinians and Israeli police clash at Jerusalem holy site

Palestinians and Israeli police clash at Jerusalem holy site”

In the meantime, Israeli police said that four officers received light injuries during clashes which were attended by "thousands of people".

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to the Jewish people as the Temple Mount, is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

Last year, a record number of Jews were reported to have visited the Temple Mount for Tisha B'Av, leading to rebukes from the Palestinian Authority and Jordan, which manages the compound through the Waqf.

They said the move was in response to police announcing they would consider allowing Jews to ascend the holy site.

It is located in east Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed in a move never recognised by the global community.

Jewish visitors then entered the area under heavy police guard and no serious violence was reported. Jews refer to the area as the "Temple Mount", claiming it was the site of two prominent Jewish temples in ancient times.

"The storming of al-Aqsa mosque compound by Israeli occupation forces this Eid morning is an act of recklessness and aggression", she said in a statement.

The separate incident on the Gaza border followed two similar ones since the start of the month.

The Israeli military said an "armed terrorist" approached the frontier early Sunday and opened fire toward troops on the other side, who responded by shooting at the attacker.

The clashes came amid heightened tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, just days after an Israeli soldier was killed south of Jerusalem.

Regular protests and clashes erupted along the border of the blockaded Gaza Strip in March 2018.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniya spoke of the Al-Aqsa clashes on Sunday, saying it "shows the religious dimension of the conflict".

While people around the world traditionally head to markets several days before the Eid to buy gifts, candies and new clothes for their families, the impoverished people in Gaza have been marking Eid al-Adha under harsh conditions imposed by the Israeli regime since 2007.

On Saturday night, small-scale scuffles broke out between police and East Jerusalem Palestinians at the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, as an annual right-wing march around the Old City walls passed.
