Cable car crash in Canada caused by vandalism, say police”

The Sea To Sky Gondola in Squamish is closed after a cable detached and a gondola came crashing to the ground early Saturday morning.

RCMP say they're still assessing the damage, but early signs point to the Sea to Sky Gondola cable being cut.

Squamish RCMP Const. Ashley MacKay confirmed Mounties were called around 8:45am after a worker at the summit heard a loud bang and found the cable broken.

"I just can't even believe someone would do this". She said more information would be provided later. Each cabin vehicle, featuring padded seats and floor-to-ceiling windows, holds up to eight people. The gondola is now closed. "Please remember that no detail is too small", MacKay said.

Sea to Sky Gondola general manager Kirby Brown declined an interview Saturday.

The gondola wasn't operating at the time and nobody was injured. "The cable was absolutely, without question, tampered with", Mr. Bailey said in an interview late Sunday, noting that the cable is about 5.5 centimetres in diameter with six steel strands interwoven. "It's like a metal rope that's twisted together into a cable. They're not elevated. But that does not mean that 31 cars have been damaged".

"We don't know how long it's going to take us to figure out the cause", Bailey told CTV News.

"Conservatively, it's going to be over $1-million in damage", he estimated. More updates as they become available.

In a written statement, Lesley Weeks, executive director of Tourism Squamish, wrote: "Sea to Sky Gondola is one of Squamish's key attractions and it's very saddening to lose a main experience during the busy summer months".

'We recognize the potential of what could have been and are thankful that no one was injured.

Police started their investigation after gondola staff received reports on Saturday at around 4:30 a.m. that the haul rope on the gondola had fallen.

Police said no one was injured and asked for information from nearby hikers and campers who may have witnessed the incident.

Canadian police are investigating after a cable vehicle gondola was sabotaged in an apparent act of vandalism.

Austria-based Doppelmayr Garaventa Group manufactured the gondola operation. "A state-of-the-art gondola system for transporting guests comfortably, safely and quietly to the inaccessible", according to a description on Sea to Sky Gondola's website.

Hyatt, who owns Love & Confetti Wedding and Event Planning, is now working to help five couples find alternate venues for weddings booked at Sea to Sky in the next two months.
