'Complete and utter you-know-what', DeChambeau hits back at slow play critics

'Complete and utter you-know-what', DeChambeau hits back at slow play critics”

Sometimes the voices calling for change are simply too loud to ignore.

Slow play has become a big issue in the sport and players including four-time major victor Brooks Koepka have been open in their criticism of players who take too long over shots.

Fellow PGA Tour players were among those weighing in after a video showed DeChambeau taking more than two minutes to make a putt.

Koepka has been outspoken about slow play for the last few months, taking his complaints public after several slow rounds, including most recently at The Open when he called out J.B. Holmes.

DeChambeau started his second round on the back nine, and on the par-4 16th hole, The Northern Trust defending champion drew some attention on Twitter when a video showed him pacing off a 70-yard shot.

On another example came on the eighth green, where DeChambeau had an 8-foot putt for birdie.

DeChambeau defended himself after Saturday's round, immediately launching into an impassioned explanation of why he believes he is being unfairly singled out.

Eddie Pepperell labelled the American a "single-minded twit" while Ian Poulter implied DeChambeau was one of the players who "continually disrespect their fellow pros and continue to break the rules without a conscience".

"Let's talk about slow play".

"Some of these are things we can influence, and some are not", Dennis said. One minute is allowed for the first player to hit a particular shot and 40 is seconds allowed for the others. But those times only come into question if a group has fallen out of position and has been put "on the clock"-if the group is in position, players are not timed".

Pepperell, who is not playing the Northern Trust - the first of the PGA Tour's play-off events - added: "When it's as egregious as Bryson was [on Saturday], and if they're already behind, then shot penalties should be handed out". Something needs to be done about it and hopefully this will lead to the Tour actually doing something to punish slow players.

The Tour also said Saturday that it would employ its Shotlink technology to provide players a pace-of-play report to help them understand why they might play slower in certain situations.
