England replace Moeen Ali with Jack Leach for second Ashes Test

England replace Moeen Ali with Jack Leach for second Ashes Test”

Australia's Pat Cummins says his side know exactly what to expect from England's Jofra Archer if he makes his Ashes debut on Wednesday at Lords.

Leach, man of the match in his most recent test outing against Ireland a fortnight ago, has come in for fellow spinner Moeen, who has been omitted after a poor showing in the 251-run defeat to Australia last week.

His second-innings bowling display was particularly concerning, with Moeen offering neither control nor persistent wicket-taking on a wearing pitch favouring spinners and even bowling a couple of head-high beamers.

England selectors made a few changes to the second Test squad.

Leach will be tasked with slowing Steve Smith, who scored a century in both innings last week to put England to the sword, but the Somerset man is keen not to overthink the task ahead.

Although England player Moeen Ali failed to perform in the first Ashes Test, Australian batsman Callum Ferguson believes the 32-year-old has got the ability to be the x-factor for the hosts.

Smith became only the fifth Australian to register hundreds in either innings of an Ashes contest at Edgbaston though England are likely to have more of a varied bowling attack at headquarters.

"There has been a focus on his supposed weakness against left-arm spin", he said.

England will be without Anderson, with Jofra Archer set to replace the Ashes veteran in the England XI and make his Test debut - a month after bowling the Super Over in the World Cup final win over New Zealand.

Left-arm spinner Jack Leach shone with the bat for England against Ireland at Lord's.

"It's really disappointing for Olly that he's been ruled out of action for such an important two weeks of cricket because of a recurrence of his back injury", Paul Farbrace, sport director at Warwickshire CCC, said on the club's website.
