Four killed in California stabbing spree

Four killed in California stabbing spree”

An alarm company saw the robbery on a live television feed and called police. "He is a violent individual who should never have been considered for early release under AB109", Garden Grove Police Chief Tom DaRe said at a press conference Thursday, adding that it's getting harder to keep people safe due to the bill.

A 33-year-old man was arrested for stabbing four people to death in a crime spree covering Garden Grove and Santa Ana, Calif., on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019. Two others were injured.

"We just know this was a random act of violence and the guy unleashed evil across our two counties".

Erwin Hauprich says his father, 62-year-old Helmuth Hauprich, died at a hospital Wednesday after he and his roommate were attacked at their Garden Grove apartment.

"This female employee was very courageous", Whitney said.

Police believe the motive for the killings was nothing more than "robbery, hate, homicide". Both had been stabbed several times.

One of those victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died at the hospital, according to authorities.

Just five minutes later, around 6:10 p.m., he attacked a man pumping gas at a station in Garden Grove, stabbing him in the back and nearly cutting off his nose, police said, according to the Times. "This guy was armed with knives".

Just over 20 minutes later another robbery was reported at an insurance business.

A woman at an insurance company was stabbed at a robbery there, and a man pumping gas at a Chevron station was stabbed several times and had his nose almost severed, Whitney said.

"Without a doubt other people would have been at risk if it weren't for their actions", Whitney said.

The footage released Thursday by Garden Grove police shows the woman seated in a small insurance office when a man in a blue hoodie approaches her and pulls out the knives.

The deadly spree began at 4:09 p.m. local time on Wednesday and ended at 6:25 p.m. after officers spotted his auto in front of a 7-Eleven in Santa Ana.

"I've been a police officer for 30 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen a suspect kill four people and stab others", Whitney said, according to the Los Angeles Times. Shortly after, a man at the gas station was attacked, he said.

They saw the auto parked at a 7-Eleven and police surrounded the convenience store.

Shortly after that, the suspect, who was driving a silver Mercedes, robbed a bakery in Garden Grove, and police started receiving more calls about a man armed with a knife. A security guard was stabbed there and his gun was stolen.

The police also told the media that another stabbing had taken place previously at a Subway restaurant across the street.

Police work the scene of a stabbing in Santa Ana, Calif., on August 7, 2019.

After his arrest, the suspect continued to be violent, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about $200, she said.

There was no evidence Castaneda was under the influence, nor was Whitney aware of any history of mental illness.

Court records show his wife, Yessica Rodriguez, sought a restraining order last year after she said Castaneda threw a beer can at her 16-year-old daughter. "And we're here in a collaborated effort together to try and stop this violence in Garden Grove".

When police arrived and approached Warner, he assaulted an officer and fled on foot.

Castaneda was convicted in 2009 of spousal abuse and paroled after serving about a year in prison, corrections officials said.

The Associated Press reported that he served about two years of a four-year sentence and was released on probation in January 2016, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

CNN has reached out to Castaneda's attorney for comment.
