Major Power Failure Affecting Trains And Airports In Large Areas Of UK”

National Grid, which owns the electricity transmission system in England and Wales, said there had been "issues" with two power generators and the problems have now been resolved. London and large chunk of the United Kingdom were hit with a power cut Friday afternoon that disrupted train travel and snarled rush-hour traffic.

Some operators said full services to and from the capital would be cancelled for Friday night.

The National Grid said it will "learn the lessons" after the incident.

"However, Ofgem understands the frustration this power cut has caused consumers".

A back-up generator failed at Ipswich Hospital after the power cut, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Traffic lights in some areas also stopped working.

She added: "National Grid must urgently review and report to Ofgem". He said it was unclear whether the two near-simultaneous outages were connected or it was a coincidence.

According to Professor Tim Green, co-director of the Energy Futures Laboratory, Imperial College London, the first generator to disconnect on Friday was a gas-fired plant at Little Barford in Bedfordshire at 4.58pm. Two minutes later Hornsea Offshore wind farm seems to have disconnected.

The total number of affected customers was not immediately known, but an initial count showed at least 936,000 affected customers across England, including 500,000 customers in Western Power Distribution's area and 300,000 customers in the UK Power Networks, which includes London.

Previously, the UK Power Networks said on twitter that large parts of London and the South East are without electricity.

Trains began to run out of King's Cross late on Friday night after the station was shut down amid "apocalyptic" rush-hour scenes across England.

London North Eastern Railway said all services were suspended in and out of King's Cross, one of London's busiest stations.

Thameslink said their services will not be running north out of London for the rest of the day.

Transport for London said the Victoria line on the city's underground system had been suspended and warned people to take extra care when using the roads because some traffic lights were not working.

"All the traffic lights were down, but there were no police present, which meant it was risky to cross - cars weren't stopping either".

Passengers at Newcastle Airport said the power cut out for about 15 minutes, but Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports said they had not been affected.
