Nadal to meet Medvedev for Montreal title after Monfils injury

Nadal to meet Medvedev for Montreal title after Monfils injury”

Khachanov has reached his third Masters 1000 semifinal after his first came a year ago at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Frenchman had played a two-and-a-half-hour quarter-final against Roberto Bautista Agut earlier in the afternoon.

Young Russians Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov, earmarked to be future Grand Slam winners, meet in the semi-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal on Saturday, August 10.

Monfils capped the victory with a smart forehand victor after Bautista Agut had trouble with the Frenchman's serve.

Nadal made his way to the final in a walkover after Gael Monfils withdrew.

"I mean, every match I played in my life, you want to win 6-0, 6-0 of course". I don't know. It's better to ask him this question.

"I think I showed today I was a fighter", he said. "I was able to pull it out".

I'm happy. I played a good match. I had played a huge match. "I don't know if my body is ready yet, but I'll find out". "I was not. 100 per cent". "I didn't have any chance like that".

"From one side it's hard, but ... we know what to expect, how we are playing completely different styles". "I would never expect to play against them, especially in the finals of a Masters 1000". "It just means that I'm playing better now, that I'm able to beat these top players in two sets". Both have had ups and downs already in their career and are working on reviving their year in time for the US Open. I was unfortunate in March, a little bit again in July. "It was [the] safest decision not to play".

The weatherman didn't do Monfils any favours.

The rain delays had a domino effect on Saturday's schedule. The No. 6 seed had to work only a bit harder than Medvedev, since he upset the 2017 Rogers Cup victor, third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 14 minutes. Medvedev, who trains in France, is sponsored by Lacoste, has a French coach (Gilles Cervara) and speaks French, has been playing as if he's on home courts and has been embraced as one of Montreal's own.

Medvedev said he was pleased with the ease of his victory.

Khachanov, ranked No. 8, blasted a ball out of the venue during Thursday's win over Auger-Aliassime in frustration at crowd noise during play, leading to loud boos. So it was a big match.
