North Korea says latest test was 'new weapon'”

North Korean state media says Saturday's launch of two projectiles was a test to verify the capabilities of a new weapons system.

Defense officials in Seoul said what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles were fired at daybreak from near the northeastern city of Hamhung, flying 400 kilometers before splashing down in the sea.

Melissa Hanham, the deputy director of the Open Nuclear Network, said the tests show that North Korea has had two short-range ballistic missiles under development this year despite diplomacy.

According to the KCNA, North Korean defence scientists created a "new weapon system" and upon receiving a report on it, Kim instructed the military to test it immediately.

It said the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, personally oversaw the launch and expressed "great satisfaction".

The agency did not unveil any characteristics of the weapon, only noting that, according to Kim, it had been developed to suit the country's terrain.

Following the latest firings, Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday evening that Kim told him in a new letter that he wanted to resume the denuclearization talks once the joint exercise between the US and South Korea was over, and that its short range missiles "testing would stop when the exercises end".

In defense of North Korea's nuclear program, Ju told the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, "We are also compelled to develop, test, and deploy the powerful physical means essential for our national defense".

After a launch last Tuesday, North Korea said it had fired a new type of tactical guided missile.

"In a letter to me sent by Kim Jong-un, he stated, very nicely, that he would like to meet and start negotiations as soon as the joint U.S./South Korea joint. exercise are over", Trump tweeted. He said that Kim offered him "a small apology" for the recent flurry of missile tests, and that he assured him they would stop when the exercises end.

The diplomat said that "dialogue would be held strictly between the DPRK and the U.S., not between the North and the South".

The North also on Saturday lashed out at South Korea s recent acquisition of US -made F-35 fighter jets and other plans to expand its military capabilities, saying that the South will gain "nothing but destruction" if it pursues a contest of strength with the North.

But the North said that changing the name of the military exercise can not hide what it claimed is an "aggressive war game" against the regime.

The foreign ministry in Pyongyang said Trump's comments effectively recognised the North's "self-defensive rights" as a sovereign state to conduct "small" missile tests.

By only firing short-range missiles, the North is displaying a threat to South Korea and US bases in the region while maintaining Kim's promise not to test long-range missiles or nuclear weapons. -South Korea military exercises, and that he apologized for the flurry of recent short-range ballistic launches that rattled USA allies in the region.
