Perseid Meteor Shower peaks Monday night in Waterloo region

Perseid Meteor Shower peaks Monday night in Waterloo region”

When will Perseid meteor be visible in the sky?

The much-anticipated meteor shower will, again, come to a climax Monday night, leading into the wee hours of Tuesday, August 13th.

Those in the Northern Hemisphere will be treated to the best views, provided they can escape the light pollution from towns and cities.

Tonight (between August 12-13) will be the best time to see it this year.

The Perseid meteor shower, caused by debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle, started in late July. That time in between will be the best opportunity to possibly more than 60 meteors per hour.

Despite the lunar interference, the shower will still be surprisingly visible across the world given the moon's relatively low position in the southern sky due to the Earth's tilt. These are more popular among sky-watchers than other meteor showers like Leonoids or Geminids as they occur in the mid-summer.

In previous years, where the moonlight was not prevalent, one could catch over 150 meteors per hour during their peaks but because of the bright moonlight this year we could expect to see around 20 meteors an hour. It is recommended that you keep that smartphone screen away as bright screens will negatively affect your night vision and also reduces the number of meteors you can spot. According to the NASA website, the space agency plans to have a live broadcast from a camera in Huntsville, Alambama.

As NASA explains, Meteor showers take their name from the location of the radiant. The meteors are called the Perseids because they radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus.
