Prime Minister slams Cricket Australia's 'mystifying' transgender policy

Prime Minister slams Cricket Australia's 'mystifying' transgender policy”

She further added that the Australian women's cricket team members were consulted and they were quite supportive of CA's efforts to include transgender players to the mainstream cricket.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison during question time in the House of Representatives at Parliament House on July 4, 2019 in Canberra, Australia. "Our dedication to a fair and inclusive sport across worldwide and domestic competitions sees the policy strike a balance between the opportunity to participate and ensuring fair competition".

"It's pretty heavy handed to put it mildly", he said on 2GB radio.

"So why there's a necessity to get the sledgehammer out on this is mystifying me, but I think we need to get the issue in perspective and ensure we manage it calmly".

In an article on Friday, The Australian, a newspaper, reported, "Mums and dads who run suburban and country cricket clubs could be prosecuted under state and federal discrimination laws for failing to allow anyone who identities as female to play in a women's team". Cricket Australia's vision is to be a sport for all, so everyone deserves to be included.

'As strength, stamina and physique are all relevant factors when competing in competitive sport, transgender and gender-diverse players will be supported to participate in elite cricket, subject to certain criteria through the implementation of this policy'.

Players seeking to compete in the elite women's category must demonstrate a testosterone level of less than 10 nanomoles per litre for at least 12 months prior to their nomination - the same standard applied by the International Olympic Committee.

"It doesn't make any sense that today, people are discriminated against, harassed or excluded, because of who they are", Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts said in a statement.

Cricket Australia announced on Thursday that it commenced consultations with key stakeholders in October 2018 to develop its Elite Cricket Policy and Guidelines for Community Cricket.

Erica James, a university-level transgender cricketer, was featured in a video by Cricket Australia on its transgender policy.

Imagine having one club being active in their inclusivity of trans and gender-diverse players, but another club stubbornly remaining steadfast in outdated views.

"I'd love to see more transgender people engaging in sport, I've probably had more involvement with transgender sport people than most".

He says the policy will align closely with the International Cricket Council's Eligibility on the Basis of Gender Recognition, while a referral process to an expert panel had been established to ensure fair and meaningful competition.
