Raheem Sterling happy with ‘great’ start to Manchester City’s season

Raheem Sterling happy with ‘great’ start to Manchester City’s season”

Manchester City´s English midfielder Raheem Sterling (C) celebrates scoring their third goal during the English Premier League football match between West Ham United and Manchester City at The London Stadium, in east London on August 10, 2019.

The visitors led at the break thanks to Gabriel Jesus' opener, but moved through the gears after the break as Sterling scored twice in 14 minutes.

I didn't like the way Guardiola's team played against us, City used tactical fouls to stop us.

As well as suffering the joint-heaviest defeat of his brief managerial career to date, Lampard was dealt the biggest reversal by a Chelsea boss in their first game in charge since Danny Blanchflower oversaw a 7-2 loss at Middlesbrough in December 1978.

City laid down an ominous marker in their opening game of the season, sweeping aside West Ham with apparent ease.

West Ham had a poor start to their league campaign previous year as well, but they recovered and managed to finish in the top half of the league table.

It was only a matter of when City, with off-season signing Rodri looking assured in midfield, would increase the tempo and make more of their superiority.

Sterling appeared to be in line with the last defender and Guardiola wasn't happy with the decision.

Ederson was forced to make a double save from Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, then Lanzini in West Ham's best phase. They lose the ball and bang, they go straight away.

Jesus became the first player to have a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Premier League when, in the 53rd minute, he finished off Sterling's pass following a fine move. So you have to be strong, calm and positive.

VAR was needed again when Sterling grabbed his second in the 75th, timing his run for Mahrez's ball over the top before lifting it over Fabianski, and this time, the goal was allowed.

City had a goal ruled out for the tightest of offside calls against Sterling and Sergio Aguero was afforded the chance to retake a penalty by VAR after seeing his first attempt saved. A VAR check showed Declan Rice was encroaching in the penalty area.

Elsewhere, Brighton beat Watford 3-0 in a dream debut for new manager Graham Potter.

It should perhaps come as little surprise that Norwich left Merseyside with nothing given their woeful record on the opening day - they have won their first match of the league season in just one of the last 17 seasons.
