Typhoon Lekima leaves 32 dead in eastern China”

Typhoon Lekima has killed at least 32 people in East China's densely populated Zhejiang province after making landfall on Saturday, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Footage on state broadcaster CCTV showed fields and streets flooded by muddy water, submerged vehicles, scattered debris and trees blown over as strong winds and rain from Typhoon Lekima pounded cities along the seaboard.

By Monday morning, the death toll in Zhejiang increased to 39 while nine others remained missing, Xinhua news agency quoted the provincial flood control headquarters as saying.

"In Zhejiang alone, more than 21,000 service personnel and militia members have been engaged in rescue and relief".

The death toll from a typhoon in eastern China has risen to 45, with an estimated 16 people missing.

The ninth and strongest typhoon of the year has affected 6.68 million residents in Zhejiang, among whom 1.26 million were evacuated.

Most of the victims were in a village in Yongjia county, where a landslide blocked a river that then poured into the small town, killing 23 people.

According to authorities, the natural disaster has caused economic losses of more than 15.8 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion).

Lekima is expected to make a second landing along the coastline in Shandong late Sunday, packing strong winds and heavy downpours, the National Meteorological Center warned.

Shandong air traffic management bureau said the typhoon will greatly affect traffic in airports of the area. A total of 47 flights have been adjusted.

Xinhua reported that Qingdao city in Shandong issued a red alert for heavy rain on Sunday and shut all its tourist destinations to the public, adding that 127 trains and all long-distance bus services had been suspended.
