UN Staff Members Killed in Benghazi Bombing

UN Staff Members Killed in Benghazi Bombing”

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres released a statement condemning the vehicle bomb attack in front of a shopping mall in the Libyan city of Benghazi which has left three UN workers dead, three others injured and dozens of civilians wounded.

Around the time of the blast, LNA commander Khalifa Haftar announced a halt to military operations for 48 hours during the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which started on Saturday, according to a statement from his forces in Benghazi.

He was working under the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Haftar's spokesman said the ceasefire was "out of respect for this occasion's place in our spirits.so that Libyan citizens can celebrate this Eid in peace".

The most unsafe scenario is implemented in Libya because of growing terrorist activity there, Russia's acting Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said at the extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Libya.

In a statement, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Ghassan Salame says the explosion took place in front of a shopping mall in the eastern city of Benghazi, which resulted in a number of civilian casualties, including United Nations staff.

Previously, a security official had said that eight other people were injured, including a child.

The UN special envoy for Libya, Ghassan Salame, condemned what he called a "cowardly attack".

Footage circulated online shows what appears to be burnt UN-owned vehicles, as thick smoke billows into the sky.

Last year, at least 33 people were killed in twin auto bombings that struck close to a mosque in Benghazi.

Earlier this week, the United Nations envoy for Libya Ghassan Salame urged the LNA and the UN-supported government to declare a ceasefire for the holiday.

Two people were killed and 10 more injured on Saturday in the Libyan city of Benghazi as a result of an explosion that targeted the United Nations mission in the country, a medical source said.

Thousands of African migrants captured by Libyan forces supported by the European Union are trapped in detention centers near the front lines. They also resorted heavily to airstrikes and attacks by drones. An airstrike on one facility early last month killed more than 50 people, mainly migrants held in a hangar that collapsed on top of them. Armed groups have proliferated, and the country has emerged as a major transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty for a better life in Europe.
