Bolton says USA to 'move very quickly' on post-Brexit trade deal

Bolton says USA to 'move very quickly' on post-Brexit trade deal”

"A no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic for Scotland and the United Kingdom, and voters deserve a final say on whether they want to keep the best deal we have and remain in the European Union".

Jolyon Maugham QC, director of the Good Law Project, said: "A man with no mandate seeks to cancel Parliament for fear it will stop him inflicting on an unwilling public an outcome they did not vote for and do not want".

A central message Bolton was making is that the United States will help cushion Britain's exit from the European Union with a free trade deal that is being negotiated by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his British counterpart, Liz Truss.

Bolton said Britain and the United States could agree trade deals on a sector-by-sector basis, leaving more hard areas in the trading relationship until later.

But a clean break with the European Union would allow the UK to immediately launch negotiations on a free trade agreement with the United States.

"That would then lock that in and when the other areas that might be more hard were concluded later, you could combine it in one overall agreement".

The Government announced a £2.1 billion funding boost for no-deal Brexit preparations earlier this month, which included money for improvements to infrastructure at ports.

In his campaign before being elected Conservative Party leader last month, Boris Johnson said he would introduce an immigration system such as the Australian one, in which candidates for permanent residency and employment are ranked according to a point system depending on their education and skills.

MPs are said to believe the Fixed-Term Parliament Act, which dictates what happens if a prime minister loses the confidence of MPs, gives them an opportunity to mobilise against no deal.

Bolton is expected to urge British officials to align policy on Iran more closely with that of Washington, which has pressured Tehran with ever-tightening sanctions after Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal.

But, after his meetings Bolton said talks on some of these thornier diplomatic issues could wait.

"We want to move very quickly".

He added: "We don't want to put you under pressure on these issues".

British marines seized an Iranian vessel, which is suspected of smuggling oil to Syria, off the coast of Gibraltar on July 4.

The pair also addressed shared security concerns including an escalating Gulf standoff with Iran and Britain's decision on whether to use Chinese firm Huawei to help build its 5G network, against the wishes of the US.
