Canada police: 2 teen fugitives took their own lives

Canada police: 2 teen fugitives took their own lives”

The bodies were also found approximately 5 miles from where police located a burned-out vehicle they believe belonged to the suspects on July 22 and approximately 2,000 miles from where the murders took place in northern British Columbia.

The Manitoba Medical Examiner completed the autopsies on two bodies located in Manitoba on August 7, and both confirmed their identities and that the two died in suicides by gunfire.

Investigators located the bodies last week about eight kilometres from where Dyck's burnt Toyota Rav4 was discovered near the Fox Lake Cree Nation north of Gillam on July 22 - the same day the teenagers were last seen alive. They are working to confirm whether the guns are connected to the murders.

The RCMP say once its review has been completed in the next few weeks it will provide the families with an update and then will release the information publicly. The suspects had not been seen since a burned-out auto was found on July 22.

The bodies of Deese and Fowler were found on the Alaska Highway, 470 kilometres from where Dyck's body was discovered, on July 19.

McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, 18, were charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck.

The teens' bodies were found within a kilometer from where the unspecified items were discovered, MacLatchy said. They were also accused of killing Australian Lucas Fowler and American Chynna Deese.

A review will be completed within the next few weeks, officials said.

RCMP say the next of kin have been notified and they have been offered support.

The sorry tale ended with best friends Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky apparently ending their own lives in remote, thick bushland 3000km away.

Alan Schmegelsky said he didn't believe that his son identified as a neo-Nazi, but that he did think the memorabilia was "cool".

Gillam and the nearby town of York Landing - which have a collective population of less than 2000 - were placed in lockdown for days as police conducted door-to-door searches of homes and abandoned buildings.

Police sent in specialised teams and began searching high-probability areas. A police helicopter initially spotted a damaged boat along the Nelson River last week and a follow-up search in the area uncovered the items directly linked to the two in what was described as very tough terrain.

"We are not defeated by divorce, mental health, violence, poverty and socioeconomic constraints, domestic disputes, alcohol or drugs, social media and bullying, feelings of loneliness, or disparities", Deese wrote, noting that her sister rose to become the first generation of her immediate family to go to college.

On the weekend the RCMP told reporters they had found another "item" and were attempting to discern its importance to the investigation - again, police didn't say what the item was.
