Minister says Epstein’s French connections must be probed despite prison death

Minister says Epstein’s French connections must be probed despite prison death”

Guards in Jeffrey Epstein's unit were working "extreme overtime" in the hours before his death, leaving gaps in his supervision, United States media report.

Another guard was also forced to work mandatory overtime, according to the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity since they aren't authorized to discuss jail operations publicly.

An autopsy was performed Sunday, but New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said investigators were awaiting further information. The Associated Press has not independently confirmed the information. But the "procedure was not followed overnight", on the night before his death, according to the source. He was later pronounced dead from an apparent suicide, the BOP said.

The Department of Justice and the FBI have both launched investigations into Epstein's death amid questions surrounding the circumstances.

The raids came as US Attorney General Bill Barr said there had been "serious irregularities" at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan where Epstein, 66, died. Epstein pled not guilty, but had he been convicted, he faced up to 45 years in prison. U.S. Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned last month after coming under fire for overseeing that deal when he was U.S. attorney in Miami.

Epstein had been charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.

The city's former mayor, Rudy Giuliani, now a lawyer for U.S. President Donald Trump, tweeted out several questions about Epstein's death.

Epstein's death is the latest black eye for the Bureau of Prisons, which was already was under fire over the October beating death of Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger at a federal prison in West Virginia.

"Every single person in the Justice Department - from your Main Justice headquarters staff all the way to the night-shift jailer - knew that this man was a suicide risk, and that his dark secrets couldn't be allowed to die with him", Sasse wrote Saturday in a letter addressed to Barr.

The records contain graphic allegations against Mr Epstein, as well as the transcript of a 2016 deposition of Mr Epstein in which he repeatedly refused to answer questions to avoid incriminating himself. The New York Times reported that he owned property in the French capital.

"We've worked so hard to get here, and he stole that from us, too", she told The New York Times.

Lindsay Hayes, a nationally recognized expert on suicide prevention behind bars, said that cameras are often ineffective because they require a staff member to be dedicated full time to monitoring the video feed 24 hours a day.

His death touched off outrage from Attorney General William Barr, politicians and many of Epstein's alleged victims, who fear that they may lose their day in court now that Epstein is dead.

"We would like to use this occasion to highlight again our utmost determination to protect young girls from sexual violence and especially from being exploited by criminal networks, and this should result in new measures being announced during the final quarter of this year", added Schiappa.

His lawyers maintained that the new charges in NY were covered by the 2008 plea deal and that Epstein hadn't had any illicit contact with underage girls since serving his 13-month sentence in Florida.

Before his legal troubles, Epstein led a life of extraordinary luxury that drew powerful people into his orbit. Epstein soon began spending his fortune - including on a mansion in Florida, a ranch in New Mexico, and reputedly the largest private home in NY.
