Missy Elliott Finally Getting The Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs

Missy Elliott Finally Getting The Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs”

The internet spoke and MTV listened.

"On Monday, MTV announced that the 5'2" emcee and hip-hop pioneer - known by her Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott nickname - would receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the annual awards show, which will broadcast live globally from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Monday, Aug. 26. Then, in May, she received an honorary doctorate degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, alongside Justin Timberlake.

Missy took to Twitter on Monday after the big announcement to react to the news.

The 48-year-old is having a pretty stellar year, to say the least.

The Get Ur Freak On songstress posted a picture of herself in an astronaut suit ala the VMA trophies as she added: "I am crying happy tears".

"Missy's impact on the music landscape is indelible", said Bruce Gillmer, MTV International co-brand head and Viacom music and music talent head.

With over 30 years in the business, Missy's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is certainly long overdue, but more than well-deserved.

Since her debut video for "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" in 1997, where she sported an inflated trash bag with confidence and charisma, Elliott has been a powerhouse on the music video scene with an oddball, eccentric and creative style that's inspired generations after her.

Over the course of her decades-long career, the five-time Grammy victor has not only sold more than 30 million records worldwide, but she's also positioned herself as an influential and pioneering producer, songwriter, singer and rapper.

The ceremony which airs live on MTV on August 26, will be Missy's first time performing live in over a decade.
