Pensioner found with dentures in his throat eight days after general anaesthetic

Pensioner found with dentures in his throat eight days after general anaesthetic”

Following a minor operation on his abdomen, he had been in pain, coughing up blood and unable to swallow solid food for nearly a week.

The man knew his dentures were missing, but didn't realize where they were. The doctors were unable to determine what was causing these symptoms and sent him home after prescribing mouthwash, antibiotics, and steroids.

A man who inhaled his false teeth while under aesthetic had the dentures stuck in his throat for eight days.

According to one of the 72-year-old man's United Kingdom doctors, who wrote about the case in BMJ Case Reports on Monday, his trouble began soon after a successful and seemingly well-done surgery that removed a benign lump from inside his chest.

When the pain intensified, ER doctors noticed "a metallic semicircular object" - with the retired electrician telling them "his dentures had been lost" during surgery eightdays earlier, the report states.

According to the report, six days after his surgery, the man went to the emergency department.

Over the next six weeks, however, his tissue healed, he did not require any more emergency care, and his blood count returned to normal, according to the August 12 BMJ Case Reports. He was also having a hard time breathing, especially when he laid down, which forced him to start sleeping sitting upright on his couch.

Upon returning to the hospital, doctors discovered that he had inhaled his dentures during surgery. Loose teeth could be knocked down the throat when tubes are put into the airway. They found a semi-circular object lying across his vocal cords, which had caused internal swelling and blistering, according to a report in the BMJ Case Reports medical journal.

Fantastic x-ray images clearly show the dentures - a metal roof plate and three false teeth - lodged in his throat. A trip to the X-ray provided confirmation and the man was whisked off to the operating room, where the dentures were plucked out with a pair of forceps.

In the British case, after the dentures were removed, the man had several bouts of bleeding that required more surgery before he recovered.

But by this time the patient had lost so much blood that he required a blood transfusion.

According to the report, a check-up a week after the procedure showed the tissue was healing, and six weeks after that the man had not needed further emergency care.

The man was rushed to surgery, where the dentures were removed.

"The case was subject to a full Trust investigation, as we take the learning from any incident extremely seriously to ensure we continuously improve our services to patients". He later passed the false teeth through his digestive system, the article said.

"The first is to always listen to your patient", she wrote.
