Tarantino Addresses Bruce Lee Controversy in a Press Conference”

Moh's Lee also says at one point that he could beat Muhammad Ali. What is Bruce Lee talking about in the whole thing?

Tarantino has now spoken about his decision to portray Bruce Lee in this manner, saying at a press junket in Moscow: "Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy". Caldwell accused Tarantino of unfairly portraying Lee as an "arrogant a**hole". "The way he was talking, I didn't just make a lot of that up".

Meanwhile, his widow Linda Lee added that the film was "just bad", stating, "I thought the character was like a caricature of himself and made him look stupid, silly and made to be insultingly 'Chinesey.' It strayed so far from the truth of who he was and of any actual encounter he had". "People say, 'he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali.' Yes, he did". Alright? Not only did he say that but his wife, Linda Lee, said that in her first biography I ever read. "She absolutely said that", the director continued.

"Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" features a scene where Brad Pitt's character Cliff Booth beats Lee in a one-on-one fight.

Once suspects the above quotes won't have much of an impact on the arguments surrounding Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it's admittedly pretty fascinating to hear Tarantino walk us through his thought process on all this.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is slated to release in India on August 15, 2019, i.e. Independence Day 2019.

While Brad Pitt's character was fictional, the idea that he could hold his own against Bruce Lee was intentional.

Polly, author of Bruce Lee: A Life, told USA Today that the action hero was "often a cocky, strutting braggart, but Tarantino took those traits and exaggerated them to the point of caricature".

Tarantino fell back on a defense of his depiction of Lee by saying that ultimately, the story of Once Upon a Hollywood, and some of its characters, is fiction.

There's no question that Quentin Tarantino is a Bruce Lee fan, as previously evidenced by how The Bride's yellow tracksuit in Kill Bill Vol. 1 looks like the one Lee wore in Game of Death. "He's a fictional character, it's the same as asking if Bruce Lee would win in a fight with Dracula".

That logic echoes what I personally believe to be the point of including Lee in this film at all: what stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo described as the objective of the scene, which was to "explain to the audience the level at which Cliff was [operating]".

"[Cliff] has killed many men in World War II in hand-to-hand combat", Tarantino said. Maybe he was cocky in as far as martial arts because he was very sure of himself. What he admires is combat, and boxing is a closer approximation of combat as a sport than martial arts tournaments are. Cliff is not even part of a sport that is like combat, he is a warrior. "Brad would not be able to beat up Bruce Lee, but Cliff maybe could", he said to Russian press. "He is a combat person", Tarantino said.
