The fastest Porsche SUV ever is a plug-in hybrid

The fastest Porsche SUV ever is a plug-in hybrid”

Porsche has introduced the new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe.

In the US, prices for the Porsche Turbo S E-Hybrid start at $161,900 for the regular body style and $164,400 for the Coupe. Alone, it's good for 541 horsepower, but then the Cayenne engineers strap on a 134 horsepower electric motor. This enables the Cayenne - which now weighs just a sliver under two and a half tonnes (2,535 kg for the Coupé) - to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and onward to 200 km/h in 13.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 295 km/h. Just how much of that power makes it to the road, and in what manner, will depend on the drive mode.

The electric motor is powered by a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and is sandwiched between the V8 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It means that each can power the SUV independently, or they can join forces if required.

Standard equipment abounds on the Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe, given its position atop the Cayenne Coupe lineup. Both Cayenne Coupe hybrids get the same fixed upper roof spoiler, and add an adaptive spoiler beneath it that can extend 5.3 inches at 56 miles per hour and above to add aero stability.

The Sport Chrono Package comes standard on each of the three, headlining the list of additional standard kit. Other highlights include 18-way power adjustable adaptive sport seats, Porsche torque vectoring plus and Porsche dynamic chassis control. 0-60 miles per hour comes in 4.7 seconds and top speed is 157 miles per hour, and the Sport Chrono Package comes fitted as standard. Auxiliary air-conditioning, controlled through the PCM and the Porsche Connect app, is also offered, along with options such as 22-inch alloy wheels and rear-wheel steering. Eighteen-way adaptive sport seats are standard, too, for a little extra comfort. It comes with various driving modes - Hybrid Auto, Sport, Sport Plus modes, along with E-Charge and E-Hold settings.

As the name suggests, the SUVs inherit their powertrains from the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, in this case a 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 that develops 550 PS and 770 Nm of torque.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe gets eight-way seats, a fixed panoramic roof, and 20-inch Cayenne Design wheels.

Porsche says all three cars should arrive in dealerships in the U.S. sometime in Q1 2020. With 670 hp and 663 ft lbs of torque apiece, the Turbo S E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe lead the 2020 Cayenne range.
