UN probing 35 North Korean cyberattacks in 17 countries:The Asahi Shimbun”

One attack was reportedly suffered by thirteen countries: Costa Rica, Gambia, Guatemala, Kuwait, Liberia, Malaysia, Malta, Nigeria, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Tunisia, and Vietnam.

The UN has ramped up its investigation of North Korean cyber-attacks following the release of a report detailing efforts to accumulate wealth for weapons programs.

As per users and exchange attacks, one of the neighboring country's big cryptocurrency exchanges, Bithumb has reportedly fallen victim on at least 4 different occasions between 2017 to 2019, losing about $58 million in the process. The intergovernmental organization is investigating 35 North Korea cyberattacks in 17 countries.

MyBroadband also previously reported that the WannaCry ransomware attack which hit several South African companies, including Telkom, was linked to North Korean attackers.

The experts noted in the report that implementing North Korea's increasingly sophisticated attacks "is low risk and high yield", and often requires just a laptop computer and internet access. Another known method is by crypto mining activities for funding professional military branches.

According to the South China Morning Post, hackers targeted South Korea the most, with the United Nations investigating 10 attacks.

In Chile, the experts said, North Korean hackers demonstrated "increasing sophistication in social engineering", by using LinkedIn to offer a job to an employee of the Chilean interbank network Redbanc, which connects the ATMs of all the country's banks.

An instance was cited in the report where over 5,000 separate transactions were sent to different destinations before eventual conversion, making it hard to track these funds. It added that the first two attacks were in February 2017 and July 2017, with each resulted in losses of approximately $7 million. The UN experts also investigated instances of "cryptojacking" in which malware is used to infect a computer to illegally mine cryptocurrencies. It identified one instance where malware was used to mine Monero and send the mined tokens to servers at Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang.
