United Kingdom government boosts prisons, police powers in effort to fight crime

United Kingdom government boosts prisons, police powers in effort to fight crime”

The charity's chief executive Frances Crook told PA longer sentences will not work and Mr Johnson "doesn't seem to understand" how the current justice system works.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Telegraph reported that Johnson also intends to introduce tougher sentences for violent criminals and end the practice of releasing a criminal who is judged not to be unsafe after they have served half their sentence.

The government announced plans Sunday to create 10,000 more prison places to ease overcrowding and said it would allow police to stop and search people without reasonable suspicion "if serious violence is anticipated".

The Prime Minister will host a round table this week, made up of leaders from the police, prison, probation, judicial and victims' groups.

The sentencing policy review will begin this week by Whitehall officials who will directly report to Mr Johnson by Autumn of this year.

"His proposed sentencing reforms ignore evidence that shows that longer prison sentences are ineffective at deterring crime or reducing re-offending".

"We do need a sentencing review, but its aim should be to reverse decades of pointless sentence inflation".

"Intelligent investment is clearly need, but these pledges are costly election baubles, not a serious attempt to make this country safer".

Critics warned there was no evidence to suggest longer sentences would reduce crime.

Liberal Democrat justice spokeswoman Wera Hobhouse said the United Kingdom already had the largest prison population of any country in Western Europe and that a different approach was needed. All it does is overcrowd our prisons and waste millions of pounds.

"I believe the British public knows instinctively what we must do".

"Far more will be needed across the system including more substantial sums to the entire prosecution system and the Ministry of Justice including the courts service to restore public faith in our criminal justice system where increasingly those who commit crime walk free and the innocent risk being convicted".
