ISRO`s Chandrayaan-2 leaves earth`s orbit, enters lunar transfer trajectory

ISRO`s Chandrayaan-2 leaves earth`s orbit, enters lunar transfer trajectory”

During this manoeuver, the spacecraft's liquid engine was sacked for about 1,203 seconds.

The Indian space agency said the major activities include Earth-bound manoeuvres, the trans-lunar insertion, lunar-bound manoeuvres, Vikram's separation from Chandrayaan-2 and touch down on the Moon's South Pole.

The spacecraft's orbit was "progressively increased five times" between July 23 and August 6 after India's second lunar mission was launched on July 22 from its launch pad in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota on July 22.

All systems on the spacecraft are being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO's Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC).

"The final orbit raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was successfully carried out today at 02:21 am IST". If reaching Moon's orbit is one part of the mission - Isro had already put a satellite around Moon in 2008 (Chandrayaan-1) - the more crucial part of Chandrayaan-2 would be to land Vikram on Moon. The last of Chandrayaan 2's Earth-bound orbits has already brought the spacecraft fairly close to the Moon - a 4,13,623-km orbit around the Earth. With this, Chandrayaan-2 entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory.

In a giant leap for the country's ambitious low-priced space programme, ISRO's most powerful three-stage rocket GSLV-MkIII-M1 had launched the spacecraft into the orbit of the Earth on July 22 from the spaceport of Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The ISRO said that as planned it carried out the manoeuvre called Trans Lunar Insertion (TLI) at 2.21 am on Wednesday.

The Vikram lander will separate from the orbiter on September 2, 2019. India will now become the fourth nation after the United Nations, Russia and China by successfully making "soft-landing" on lunar surface. "Two orbit maneuvers will be performed on the lander before the initiation of powered descent to make a soft landing on the lunar surface on September 7, 2019", said ISRO.

Since Chandrayaan-2 took off to the skies aboard the powerful GSLV Mk-III rocket, all spacecraft systems are normal.

After the landing, the rover carry out experiments on moon's surface for one lunar day, which is equal to 14 earth days.

According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-2 is the most challenging mission ever attempted by the space agency.
