63 killed, 182 wounded in Kabul wedding blast

63 killed, 182 wounded in Kabul wedding blast”

Another 182 civilians were wounded in the Saturday night explosion, government spokesman Feroz Bashari said.

The bomber detonated his explosives near the stage where musicians were playing and "all the youths, children and all the people who were there were killed", said eyewitness Gul Mohammad.

He said he had been in the women's section of the hall - men and women are usually separated during Afghan weddings - when he heard a huge explosion in the men's area.

Another witness, Mohammad Toofan, said that "a lot of guests were martyred".

Mujib Mashal, a senior correspondent for the New York Times, said his sources were telling him that at least 40 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured.

Witnesses said a large number of people were killed, but Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said the number of casualties would not be released until Sunday morning.

The Taliban group, which is carrying out peace talks with the U.S. in Qatar, condemned the attack and denied any involvement.

Both the Taliban and the local affiliate of the Islamic State group have carried out bloody attacks in the capital.

The blast comes at an especially uncertain time in Afghanistan as the United States and the Taliban near a deal to end a almost 18-year war, the U.S.' longest conflict.

Mr Seddiqi posted on Twitter that he was "devastated" by the attack.

Taliban officials said on Saturday the killing of the brother of their leader in a bomb attack in Pakistan would not derail the talks with the United States aimed at securing their long-cherished goal of getting foreign troops out. "I was with the groom in the other room when we heard the blast and then I couldn't find anyone".

The blast happened in western Kabul, a predominantly Shia locality.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Muajahid condemned the attack through the WhatsApp messaging application, dpa news agency reported.

Insurgent attacks on Afghan weddings have occurred in the past.

Wedding halls also serve as meeting placed in Afghanistan.

In return, the Taliban would commit to various security guarantees, including a pledge that the hardliners who long harboured Al-Qaeda would not allow Afghanistan to once again become a militant safe haven. On Friday, US President Donald Trump had tweeted on completing a "very good meeting" and that many were "looking to make a deal - if possible".
