Open for business, not for sale: Greenland tells Donald Trump

Open for business, not for sale: Greenland tells Donald Trump”

Trump is planning to make his first formal visit to Denmark on 2 September, meeting the country's new Socialist prime minister, Mette Frederiksen - who herself will make her first official visit to Greenland next week - and attending a state banquet with Queen Margrethe II.

"Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism".

Greenland's strategic proximity to the Arctic and its natural resources have also caught the attention of global powers like China and Russian Federation.

Speaking of the reported interest, a spokesperson of the U.S. Embassy in Denmark said that there were just alleged comments and the embassy, therefore, had "no comment". This is not the first time an American president has coveted Greenland.

"Greenland is an independent area in the Danish kingdom and must be respected as such", he said.

For those a little rusty on the geography, Greenland is a massive, mostly ice-covered island that sits between the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans.

"Strategically it's interesting and we'd be interested, but we'll talk to them a little bit".

Two of the people also told the Journal that Trump's aides were divided on the issue, with some praising it as solid economic strategy and others dismissing it as a passing fancy.

Greenland is strategic geographically and geopolitically.

"I think we take it as a sick joke by a insane president", said Anna Kûitse Kúko, 63, who has lived in Tasiilaq almost all her life and teaches English here.

"If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof, that he has gone mad", foreign affairs spokesman for the populist Danish People's Party, Soren Espersen, told national broadcaster DR.

Under the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. acquired about 827,000 sq miles (2.1m sq km) of land from France for $15m (£12.3).

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday cited unnamed advisors as saying the USA leader asked his staff to "look into the idea" of purchasing the world's largest island. The Great Dealmaker was keeping schtum about his Big Idea, as other people fell about laughing and Greenland pointed out it wasn't for sale.

However, Duke University law professor Joseph Blocher told the BBC that the practice "has basically dried up".

CNN has contacted the White House and the State Department for comment. The sources said he had expressed interest in the autonomous Danish territory's resources and geopolitical importance. She said "If we were bought by the United States, our welfare system would be dismantled and fundamental changes would be made to Greenlandic society - we'd be crushed". In 1946, Harry S. Truman had offered Denmark to buy the ice island for $100 million.
