Steve Smith: Australia batsman ruled out of third Ashes Test”

Former Pakistan pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar is of the opinion that England's Jofra Archer is a very strong weapon in England bowling attack and they need to manage his workload well to nurture him into one of the best pacers in the world.

While Australia had won the first test at Edgbaston by 251 runs, the way England fought back in the second test at Lord's indicated how close the Ashes series would be.

Although theoretically he picked just five wickets on his Test debut, the impact that he had on the match was far greater. "We know the package he brings with his pace".

Smith was given a standing ovation as he left the field for treatment on Saturday, but he has endured a hard time while in England for the Ashes and World Cup, being booed when taking the field.

Smack it hit him just below the left ear, the cherry delivered at around 93mph, or almost 150kmph, and Smith fell flat - not a pretty sight, much like the time when Bert Oldfield was struck in the head by Harold Larwood during the Bodyline series.

The batsman was persuaded to retire hurt after receiving treatment in the middle but returned to complete his innings little more than 40 minutes later. The blow had taken its toll.

And he wasn't finished. There's a process now, but there was no way I was going to get off that field.

But it was not just the wickets that he took. He is lethal, arguably the most lethal pace bowler in world cricket now, but he doesn't make a show of it.

"I've been a big supporter of Archer for a long time and I love what I see there", McGrath was quoted as saying by BBC where he will be part of the Test Match Special commentary team and contribute a regular column to the BBC Sport website.

Many of the Australian team have played with Archer in the Indian Premier League and had known what to expect. He said afterwards they made him claustrophobic and uncomfortable.

Roberts and Walsh have famously said they never thought it necessary to sledge or go verbal when they had the ball in their hand to do the talking.

Pascoe, of course, is more famous for felling Sandeep Patil in Adelaide with a bouncer, an act he later repented.

Archer lays down Test marker: All teams want a genuinely fast bowler because speed can beat the reactions of even the best batsmen, especially if accompanied by late movement. This man will change the entire outlook of fast bowling in the modern era. I can't see too much going wrong with it.

"Bouncers are a part & parcel of the game but whenever a bowler hits a batsman on the head and he falls, courtesy requires that the bowler must go & check on him".

Just like Smith, Archer served up another brutal short ball - just the second one that Labuschagne faced - that struck the batsman flush on the helmet grill.

Root added: "When you've got that and the skill of other guys around it, it makes for a tasty combination and I think that's one of the reasons why we always felt we were in the game tonight". Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh came up with a cheeky response to Akhtar's reaction.

"Yes you did! But your actual words were hope your alright mate cause there are a few more coming", his tweet read.
