Australia batsman Steve Smith out of Ashes with concussion

Australia batsman Steve Smith out of Ashes with concussion”

Australia coach Justin Langer says Smith "felt a bit better yesterday but he is not going to have time enough to tick off everything he needs to do to be ready to play".

ENGLAND batsman Jason Roy has passed a concussion test after being hit in the nets ahead of the third Ashes Test at Headingley. Smith complained of headaches later Saturday and was ruled out of the remainder of the match after displaying concussion symptoms.

"Almost unfillable shoes, as he is nearly the best player in the world", Langer said of Smith. The third Ashes Test between Australia and England will commence from August 22.

Even Warner has got the support of his captain, Tim Paine.

England captain Joe Root won the toss and made a decision to bowl against Australia in the third Ashes Test at his Headingley home ground on Thursday.

But he didn't have his batting gear and his lack of activity was a strong indication he wouldn't play, before confirmation from Langer.

Labuschagne forced his way into the squad with impressive lead-up form, scoring over 1000 runs at an average of 65 for Welsh county Glamorgan and following it up with a battling 41 in bowler friendly conditions in Australia's intra-squad hit-out just before the 17-man Ashes squad was selected.

Warner joked with teammates that the change could be something to help him fight back after recording four single figures in a row to start the Ashes, just the second time in his 71-Test career he has endured such a hard run.

Apart from Smith, only one Australian batsman has scored a century (Matthew Wade) and Travis Head and Labuschagne have scored fifties. Khawaja's top score (this series) is about 40 so far but he is a top order player.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne saved Australia from first innings disaster.

"So I think if they'd got themselves up towards 250 it would have been a very good effort and they were looking like doing that reasonably comfortably so to lose 8/43 at the end there was disappointing".

Archer arrived at Headingley rather closer to the toss than England would have liked but their new spearhead, who came into the side after James Anderson broke down with a calf injury early during Australia's 251-run win in the series opener at Edgbaston, is a cool customer.

"We feel that the way we played at Edgbaston and most of the week this week, we can compete and play some really good cricket". Otherwise we'll keep sticking to the plan.
