CDC Says 'Don't Vape' As Lung Injury Cases Rise

CDC Says 'Don't Vape' As Lung Injury Cases Rise”

However, the specifics of the products are unknown, according to the health department.

The patients each reported using vape products or marijuana oils, extracts or concentrates in the weeks and months prior to hospitalization.

As of August 27, the health agencies say there are 215 people in 25 who vape and have shown up to hospitals symptoms that mimic severe pneumonia and even lung failure.

"The American Lung Association echoes the Milwaukee Health Department's warning today to e-cigarette users: 'Stop using any vape and/or e-cigarette devices immediately", the group said in a statement to WISN 12 News. "Residents are again strongly encouraged to not utilize any THC products containing e-liquid", officials added.

As 11 News previously reported, the state health department says they define a confirmed case as one that meets "all the criteria for the definition being used nationally and that exposure to vaping products was most likely the cause of the illness based on the review".

Many cases seem linked to vaping liquids containing THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Nationally, over 200 suspected cases have been reported in 22 states.

'Anyone who uses e-cigarette products should not buy these products off the street (eg, e-cigarette products with THC or other cannabinoids) and should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer, ' said the CDC and FDA in a joint statement.

Ann Scales, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Public Health, said no cases have been reported in MA yet, and hospitals aren't required to report such incidents. However, there's a serious lack of information available about what kinds of products the affected individuals were using, and it's leading to what may be an unwarranted panic. "That information is critical to help determine whether patterns emerge on which we can take additional action".

"We continue to learn more about the health effects associated with e-cigarettes".

Meanwhile, local e-cigarette giant Juul is fighting a local fight in San Francisco with an expensive ad campaign promoting a ballot measure to overturn the city's ban on e-cigarette sales. In 2018, almost 1 in every 20 middle school students (4.9 percent) reported using electronic cigarettes in the past 30 days. That's an increase from less than 1 percent in 2011.
