Chandrayan-2 gets closer to Moon

Chandrayan-2 gets closer to Moon”

"The orbit achieved is 179 km x 1412 km", Isro said after the successful manoeuvre, adding that all spacecraft parameters are normal.

Chandrayaan-2 narrowed its distance from the Moon after a manoeuvre on Wednesday morning. Chandrayaan 2 which is now in the lunar orbit is expected to perform its next orbit lowering maneuver on August 30.

Chandrayaan-2 has successfully carried out three in-orbit manoeuvres since it entered lunar orbit.

The lunar bound orbit maneuver began at 9:04 am.

The propulsion system on board the orbiter of Chandrayaan 2 was sacked for 1,190 seconds at 09:04 am on Wednesday to bring the spacecraft down to an elliptical orbit of 179 x 1,412 kms, the Isro said in a statement. Entering this circular orbit is the mission's final milestone before the Vikram lander separates from the orbiter to make its planned soft-landing on the moon's surface on 7 September.

The third lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was performed successfully on Wednesday using the onboard propulsion system, ISRO stated.

"As the Orbiter rotates at 90 degrees over the moon, onboard engines will be fired on September 2 to separate Vikram from the top of it and lower it to orbit around 100 x 30 kms above the lunar surface for soft-landing near the south pole on September 7", Sivan told news agency IANS.

India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV MkIII-M1 had successfully launched the 3,840-kgChandrayaan-2 spacecraft into the earth's orbit on July 22. This is crucial since ISRO's mission engineers won't be operating the spacecraft remotely.

Then it would perform a series of complex braking maneuvers to soft land in the South polar region of the Moon on September 7, 2019. This will be the final orbit from where the orbiter module of the spacecraft will collect data on the lunar surface and thin atmosphere for a year.
