Ebola Death Toll Tops 2000 in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Ebola Death Toll Tops 2000 in Democratic Republic of the Congo”

Ugandan health officials said she did not come into contact with anyone but her mother since entering Uganda.

Uganda, meanwhile, reported another case of Ebola - a nine-year-old girl who crossed the border from neighbouring DRC.

Ugandan authorities believe she did not have contact with any Ugandan.

This is Congo's 10th Ebola outbreak, but it is the first in the densely forested hillside provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, where militia-led violence and ethnic killing have undermined security in certain areas for decades.

Although the highly infectious disease has proved stubborn to contain inside DR Congo, cross-border contamination has been rare. It is spread from person to person through body fluids.

The girl is the fourth victim diagnosed with Ebola in Uganda to have died from the haemorrhagic fever.

The third Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize went to Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum, a 77-year-old Congolese who contributed to the discovery of the Ebola virus, and 75-year-old Francis Gervase Omaswa from Uganda who dedicated himself to nurturing health care workers.

DR Congo health officials said late Thursday that there have been "2,006 deaths (1,901 confirmed and 105 probable)" since August 2018.

Last week the World Health Organization voiced concern about the widening geographic reach of the disease but confirmed the virus had not gained a foothold in the major city of Goma, even after four cases were recorded there in July and early August.

"The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public of an imported case of Ebola Virus Disease in Kasese district".

With a population of 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has more than 4 million displaced and is home to the world's second largest food crisis with 13 million people food insecure. All responses will be confidential. "We strive towards a much more united approach and call on NGOs and UN partners to continue to accelerate all activities".

"Our commitment also means strengthening the health systems to give them all the other things they need".

So far, over 5,500 people in Uganda including frontline health workers and other workers and community people have been vaccinated against Ebola.
