Farmers' Almanac: A Brutally Cold & Wet Winter 2019-2020 Coming”

The Farmers' Almanac just released the 2019-2020 winter outlook. In fact, it refers to the upcoming winter season as a "polar coaster". The predictions are that this winter will be especially cold and snowy in most parts of the country.

An average winter temperature in the D.C. area is 38 degrees, Mr. Martin said, noting that the last time the area had a colder than normal winter was five years ago, when the snowfall was also below normal.

That exhausted old Game of Thrones reference will have renewed meaning this year, as the Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting a particularly snowy season across the country this winter.

The Midwest and Northeast will receive the worst of the frigid conditions, with the almanac predicting above-average precipitation for the states in those regions.

The Almanac also calls, "for above-normal winter precipitation over much of Canada".

Residents northeast of the Texas panhandle to the western Great Lakes will experience "a memorable storm producing hefty snow" in January and the weather system will bring plummeting temperatures and the coldest Arctic air in February. From what Gillispie can see so far it's looking to be a neutral winter.

FOX31/CH2 Meteorologist Chris Tomer says the outlook is not what he is predicting for Colorado this winter.

However, he will start to look at "climatological clues in October and November" to try to piece together what New Jersey's winter might look like.

For road conditions, January is expected to be rough in the eastern half of the USA, according to the Farmers' Almanac. "We're saying it's going to be frigid temperatures for most of the Northern Plains into the Great Lakes".

Last year's winter was record-breaking when the polar vortex swept through the Midwest in late January.

The Farmers Almanac has been around for hundreds of years using formulas to determine the weather, but there is a science side.

The almanac is "red-flagging" the dates January 4-7 and January 12-15 for "big storms" in the D.C. metropolitan area, predicting a mixture of snow, gusty winds and ice.

'Occasional wet snow and unseasonably chilly conditions will hang on for a ride that you may not be able to get off until April!' the Almanac says. The Old Farmer's Almanac forecasts hotter-than-average temperature all through June, July and early August.

"The farmers almanac is fun to read, but take it with a grain of salt", says Lawrence.
