Japan defends South Korea 'white list' removal”

South Korea's response to the possible USA-Japan trade deal is not yet known considering the current U.S.

"The government deemed that Japan caused grave change in the bilateral security cooperation environment by excluding the country from Export Trade Control Order (so-called "whitelist") on August 2 without citing clear evidence, saying that security-related issues have occurred from damaged trust between Korea and Japan", Kim You-geun, deputy chief of Cheong Wa Dae's nationwide safety workplace, mentioned final week. -South Korea alliance could be threatened if the trilateral alliance is shaken, which would only benefit North Korea and China.

After today, Japanese companies will have to go through additional procedures to export more than 800 "strategic materials"-primarily three chemicals crucial to the production of semiconductors and displays, key component's of the South Korean electronics industry-to South Korea, potentially delaying this process by weeks or even months". The varying assessments highlighted the fissure in intelligence-sharing.

Japanese government officials said the regulation of trade can not be linked to the issue of security.

Although the measures take a direct toll on Japan, removal from the GSOMIA, in the end, decreases South Korea's own national security and leaves the USA, Japan, and Korea less ready to respond to North Korean stimuli.

While the decision itself is focused on intelligence sharing, the implications are wider.

In his remarks on South Korea's decision, Kono suggested that the current trade dispute should not be linked to the intelligence sharing agreement. She added that the move "will make defending [South] Korea more complicated and increase risk to US forces".

A second senior U.S. State Department official said Washington was encouraged by continued talks at working level between the sides.

26 de agosto de 2019, 13:55Seoul, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) South Korean military forces concluded this Monday their "Territorial Defense Exercise for the East Sea, " a military drill to bolster military capacity to defend the East Sea and the Dokdo islets, according to local media. Restoring a sense of restraint will need to be a first step.

Residents say the protests first began as scandal engulfed the administration of former President Park Geun-hye, now serving a 25-year sentence for illegally including the daughter of a cult leader in government activities. Getting to the "right place" Pompeo suggested will necessitate accepting that multiple issues between South Korea and Japan are now linked and that resolving one will require making progress on all.
