Jesse Puljujarvi leaving the Oilers for Finland

Jesse Puljujarvi leaving the Oilers for Finland”

Jesse Puljujarvi may have found the top-six role he was looking for, but it won't be in the National Hockey League.

The Jesse Puljujarvi sweepstakes are still wide open after the restricted free-agent forward signed a one-year deal on Tuesday morning to play in Finland's top league this season.

In 139 regular-season games with the Oilers, Puljujarvi has scored 17 goals and accumulated 37 points. A season-ending hip injury shortened his 2018-19 campaign, with Puljujarvi having amassed only nine points in 46 games last season.

Puljujarvi played with Oulun Kärpät before he was drafted by the Oilers.

The development comes three months after the 21-year-old winger expressed to the Oilers that he wanted a fresh start outside the organization. Should he turn in a strong performance with Karpat, he would only figure to boost his trade value, which is at its lowest point right now.

More than a half-dozen players remain from Puljujarvi's time with Karpat four years ago, and former Oilers teammate Jussi Jokinen is also on the roster.

"The great thing is, Jesse has decided to make a season-long deal with us", said Karpat's sports director Harri Aho in a translated release, via The Edmonton Journal.

"At the end of the day, if you can do a deal that makes sense for the Edmonton Oilers, you do it", Oilers GM Ken Holland told Spector in response to Lehto. "We want to be there to help and support Jesse towards that goal".
