Man loses 25 percent of skin after contracting flesh-eating bacteria

Man loses 25 percent of skin after contracting flesh-eating bacteria”

A Florida father of two is fighting for his life after he contracted a flesh-eating disease from an unknown source, his family says.

David Ireland, 50, of Orlando, Fla. began having flu-like symptoms, together with aches and fever, on August 16, his spouse, Jody Ireland, informed on Monday.

Jody Ireland added that five days later, when her husband's condition took a turn for the worse, she took him to the hospital. "He was fine one minute and sick the next". I'm trying to be strong for my kids.

Ms Ireland told Fox News doctors believe it may have entered her husband's body through a wound in his leg.

David Ireland has spent the last week in the Intensive Care Unit at a Florida Hospital in critical condition following his diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis in group A strep, according to a GoFundMe set up by his brother Daniel Ireland.

"He has had 3 surgeries to remove over 25% of the skin on his body". However, his blood pressure and acid levels are leveling off "showing a hopeful sign of recovery", his brother wrote.

"David is still in a life-threatening situation but there are some small victories every day", she wrote.

"David will need to have surgery to do a reversible colostomy to help prevent his bowel movements from entering his open wounds".

'They will also be checking for more infection and if so taking more skin off, and replacing his catheter'.

On Tuesday, Jody Ireland updated the page with her husband's condition. "I ignored it for a couple days, and it just started getting bigger and bigger and bigger to the point where I couldn't walk anymore". While the bacteria is less common in pools and hot tubs due to their chlorine content (which is meant to kill any harmful bacteria), it's only a lesser risk, "but doesn't completely eliminate it", she says. They drained the swollen area and prescribed antibiotics.

"It's gonna be at least a year to a year in a half if he survives this acute stage to get all the skin put back", she said.

Various cases of flesh-eating bacteria have been reported in Florida in recent months.

While anyone can get necrotizing fasciitis, it is rare, and most patients have other health problems - such as diabetes, kidney disease or cancer - that lower their body's ability to fight infections.

Early symptoms of the disease, which can be spread through seawater or even undercooked seafood, include fever, dizziness or nausea soon after an injury or surgery, according to the CDC.
