Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford offer condolences as Bury expelled by EFL

Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford offer condolences as Bury expelled by EFL”

The EFL said on Saturday a takeover for Bury needed to take place by 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT), or their membership of the league would be withdrawn.

Bury are hopeful the English Football League will reconsider a £7m takeover bid that remains on the table following their expulsion on Tuesday, reports BBC Radio Manchester.

Bury's historic rivals Bolton - one of the founders of the Football League but who have been in administration since May - won some breathing space on Tuesday when they were given 14 days to find a buyer.

The team has been unable to play any of its first five games in the third-tier League One this season.

The four-time FA Cup winners have spent 74 seasons in the top flight, including an unbroken 11-year stint in the Premier League which only ended in 2012.

Four teams will still be promoted from League Two this season, ensuring League One is re-balanced in 2020-21, but it is expected that only one team, instead of two, will now go down to the National League this season, with two still promoted from non-league. Speaking outside the team's stadium, Gigg Lane, fans expressed sadness and anger at the fallout of the club.

It was announced this evening by administrators that a sale of the crisis club to Football Ventures (Whites) Limited had been agreed.

Shakers owner Steve Dale had been given until 5pm on Tuesday to come up with a plan for paying the club's debts and funding them going forward or sell them to someone who can.

Mr Appleton said: "This has been one of the most complicated administrations I've been involved with but I'm delighted to say we have finally reached a satisfactory conclusion with the sale to Football Ventures".

A statement from the club's administrator said: "I have every sympathy for the staff, players and fans who have been forced to stand by while their club was taken to the brink".

"The EFL board has therefore taken the decision to lift the suspension on the notice of withdrawal, which was issued as per the EFL's insolvency policy when the club entered administration in May 2019. With this in mind, we will be happy to work together with the EFL to share our findings to help them with their ongoing review of football governance, which is essential for the long term future of all members of the EFL and the broader football family".

However, having been close to a deal last Friday the plug was pulled on it, reportedly due to former owner Ken Anderson wanting assurances from the administrator that he would not be subject to repaying any more money once the club changed hands.

The sticking point during talks was understood to be a dispute between the club's most recent owner Ken Anderson and their biggest creditor, the family trust set up by Bolton businessman and benefactor Eddie Davies before his death previous year.
