The FIBA Basketball World Cup Is Starting, Can Someone Stop Team USA?

The FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held between August 31st and September 15th in China. The competition features 32 teams and the big favorite of the best online sports betting sites is team USA.

The Americans are the current holders of the World Cup and everyone expects the country to retain the title. That would push the USA above Yugoslavia as the only team with 6 trophies from the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

However, there are some question marks over the roster that head coach Gregg Popovich is taking to China. Most of the NBA’s biggest stars won’t be part of the national side and many of the team members are youngsters that lack the experience.

Harrison Barnes is the only guy that was part of the US Olympic team from 2016. Other notable names include Kemba Walker, Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, and Khris Middleton.

The biggest rivals of the USA are Serbia and Greece. The two Balkan sides have a bunch of NBA stars in their ranks, as well as players from the top European basketball leagues. Other teams that might be in contention are Spain, France, and Australia.

The first stage of the FIBA Basketball World Cup includes 8 groups and the top two teams of each of them will progress to the next round that features another 4 groups. The leading two countries will qualify for the quarterfinals and will enter a knockout format, until a champion is crowned on September 15 in Wukesong Sport Arena in Beijing.

The USA starts in a relatively modest group that also includes Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Japan. None of the teams has the talent to beat the Americans and the expectations are that the favorite should comfortably reach the knockout round.

Group H is probably the most interesting one in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Canada, Australia, and Lithuania all have solid rosters and the ambitions to move on to the next stage. Senegal is the big underdog here, but the African country should not be underestimated.

The other tricky group is F. Greece is expected to easily win, but the likes of New Zealand, Brazil, and Montenegro will fight for the second spot that seems wide open.

The first group stage will end on September 5. The teams will then have the chance to rest for 2 days, before returning for the second group stage on September 7th. The knockouts begin three days later, when the best eight teams left will fight for the FIBA World Cup title.
