West Nile Virus found in two locations in Flagstaff

West Nile Virus found in two locations in Flagstaff”

Atlantic County has reported finding a mosquito sample in Hammonton that has tested positive for West Nile Virus. CCHHS will continue trapping and testing mosquitoes in areas where there is mosquito activity until colder weather returns.

The county says the sample was collected from Horton Street and confirmed positive on August 28.

The health department recommends Utahns drain standing water; avoid being outside at dawn and dusk; wear long sleeves and trousers outside; use insect repellent that contains DEET; and make sure door and window screens are in good fix.

People are encouraged to take the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

Dawn/Dusk: Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. Stay indoors during these times or wear shoes and socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoor.

In addition to this, the CDC also recommends putting screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from getting into your home.

Use air conditioning when possible. Fix holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outdoors. Once a week, turn over, cover or throw away any items that hold standing water, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots and trash containers.

Most people who become infected with WNV experience no symptoms, but about one in five develop a mild illness, with symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash.

There is no available treatment for WNV infection other than supportive care. Among people who develop these serious symptoms approximately one in 10 will die, according to the CDC.

Vaccines in horses have proven to be a very effective prevention tool for WNV, and horses that have been vaccinated in past years do need an annual booster.

The cases, reported in Custer County and Lewis & Clark County, both happened to people over the age of 60, who are often at greater risk for severe disease, according to a press release from the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services.
