Court rejects challenge by opponents of United Kingdom parliament suspension”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit plan was facing mounting legal, political and diplomatic challenges on Friday as Ireland accused Britain of being unreasonable and former British leader John Major sought to stop the suspension of parliament.

Queen Elizabeth II, the head of state who must follow the advice of her ministers, has already given the go-ahead.

In a separate legal case in Scotland, judge Lord Doherty rejected a call for an interim interdict to block the suspension of Parliament but said a full hearing would take place on Tuesday.

"Legal proceedings can be fast-tracked as the judges in the case determine", Robert Blackburn, professor of constitutional law at King's College London, told Reuters.

Legal bids to halt Johnson's move have also been launched in London and Belfast.

If approved, the move would leave MPs opposed to no deal little time to put measures in place to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab branded such claims as "nonsense".

"We now have Scotland-first nationalism, England-first, Northern Ireland-first and Wales-first nationalisms - all challenging the very idea of one United Kingdom and creating divisions so deep that reconciliation will take years if not decades of soul searching to fix the damage being done". "We've been talking about nearly nothing but Brexit", he told reporters at a summit in Helsinki.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "In the last couple of weeks, there has been a great deal of movement from the European Union side".

"The idea that this is some kind of constitutional outrage is nonsense".

He wants the so-called backstop, the fallback provisions regarding the Irish border, scrapped completely.

"Discussions so far have shown that the two sides remain some distance apart on key issues but that both sides are willing to work hard to find a way through", Downing Street said in a statement.

"And so that's why I really hope that MPs will allow the United Kingdom to do a deal and to get ready for a no-deal Brexit - and that's the best way forward for our country".

Beyond the courts, Johnson's opponents are planning all manner of moves to stop him in his tracks.

The various courts are being asked to intervene in what is seen by Johnson's opponents as a power grab that undercuts the sovereignty of Parliament. He said there is no need for an immediate injunction because a "substantive" hearing on the case will be heard next week.

The ultimate outcome of Britain's tortuous three-year Brexit crisis remains unclear with options ranging from a frantic departure without an exit deal or a last-minute agreement to an election or referendum that could cancel the whole endeavor.

The former minister said he believes "there probably is time" to get a measure to block a no-deal Brexit through parliament despite the prorogation, which will begin in the second week of September.

Corbyn is also mulling a no-confidence vote in Johnson's Conservative government, which commands a fragile 320 to 319 majority.
