Florida prepares to open shelters as Hurricane Dorian approaches

Florida prepares to open shelters as Hurricane Dorian approaches”

Meteorologists said Dorian could make landfall in Florida on Tuesday as a category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 140mph.

"Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days", the center said.

"I can't believe we were able to get here, this morning, I'm very happy to be home", said Chiquita Kerr. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

Complicating the situation, it remains unclear where on the East Coast the storm will make landfall -- and where it will go from there.

The storm is now a Category 2 hurricane, and those already 100-mph winds are expected to strengthen over the next few days.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation said hotels and resorts throughout that part of the island nation have activated hurricane response programmes, which typically include boarding up beach-facing windows and encouraging guests to leave. The incredible NASA video shows the storm swirling above Earth, with the eye of the hurricane also visible.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency, clearing the way to bring in more fuel and call out the National Guard if necessary, and Georgia's governor followed suit.

Hurricane Dorian is predicted to hit the northern Bahamas and parts of the southeastern United States this weekend, unleashing sustained rain and wind speeds tracking around 130 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"The storm is moving to the northwest & is forecast by @NWS to approach Florida's east coast as a major hurricane".

The US Navy said it is moving more than 40 planes from Jacksonville to bases in Michigan, Ohio and Texas on Thursday, ensuring Dorian won't reach them.

Category 4 storms are capable of what experts describe as catastrophic damage, destroying homes and buildings, ripping up roads, and knocking down trees and power lines.

On Friday, Trump granted DeSantis' request for an emergency declaration in Florida, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide equipment and resources to save lives, protect property and alleviate "the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population", according to the White House.

NOAA added: "The risk of life-threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida east coast has increased, although it is too soon to determine where the highest storm surge will occur".

"We're anticipating a massive amount of flooding", DeSantis said, "We urge all Floridians to have seven days' worth of food, medicine, and water". Two thousand National Guard troops will have been mobilized for the hurricane by the end of Friday, with 2,000 more joining them on Saturday, Florida National Guard Major General James Eifert said.

"I'm really anxious about the amount of rain we'll be getting".

Orlando International Airport said it would halt commercial flights at 2.00 am (6.00 GMT) on Monday "out of an abundance of caution".

At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, NASA began slowly moving a 380-foot-high mobile launch platform to the safety of the colossal Vehicle Assembly Building, built to withstand 125 miles per hour wind.

"Do not be foolish and try to fearless out this hurricane", Minnis said. Leaving mercifully little damage in its wake in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Hurricane Dorian swirled toward the USA, with forecasters warning it will draw energy from the warm, open waters as it closes in.
