Ireland says no "credible" proposals from United Kingdom on replacing Brexit backstop

Ireland says no

Speaking from Helsinki today, Tánaiste Simon Coveney - who's visited several European capitals in recent days - reiterated the view that it's up to the United Kingdom to offer alternatives.

'That's not going to fly and it's important that we are all honest about that'. "But it's got to be credible".

United Kingdom nationals living in European Union and EFTA member states are encouraged to visit the British government's Living In Guides on its website, with specific information for each country, the statement said.

Mr Coveney said he did not see any problem, from a European perspective, in terms of "making time available for negotiations".

"But that deal has to be based on the Withdrawal Agreement and it has to be consistent with that, and if the United Kingdom wants to remove an element of the Withdrawal Agreement they have to acknowledge that that causes problems and they have to propose alternatives that can solve those problems, certainly in the case of the backstop".

The authorities said it needs to encourage individuals who might find it more challenging to finish all of the paperwork for Brexit, focusing specifically on pensioners or disabled individuals, those residing in remote locations or with mobility problems, and people needing help with speech translation or interpretation.

"If there are alternatives to the backstop that do the same job, well then let's hear them".

"What I want to do now, which is what I think most people in this country want the government to do, is get on and try and get an agreement - but if we can't get an agreement, get ready to come out anyway", he said.

'Michel Barnier is there as the chief negotiator for that goal, he has a team that's ready to go.

"But every time we ask that question, the answer isn't convincing - in fact sometimes you don't get an answer at all".

The European Commission has urged EU countries, in the event of a no deal, to "take a generous approach to the rights of United Kingdom citizens in the EU, provided that this approach is reciprocated by the UK".
