Brazil prohibits Amazon land-clearing fires for 60 days over crops, cattle grazing

Brazil prohibits Amazon land-clearing fires for 60 days over crops, cattle grazing”

Eighteen worldwide clothing brands, including Timberland and Vans, have stopped buying Brazilian leather in protest at the the huge volume of fires raging in the Amazon rainforest.

You may have seen footage of the devastating fires that have destroyed vast areas of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

Araujo said Trump agreed with Brasilia's position that the rest of the world should keep out of Brazil's affairs.

Without offering evidence, the Brazilian leader had initially suggested that non-governmental groups started the fires to try to damage the credibility of his government, which has called for looser environmental regulations in the world's largest rainforest to spur development.

But Brazil's President rejected the offer, saying he wants an apology from French president Emmanuel Macron for calling him a liar.

Brazil is also facing economic pressure over its response to the surge in fires in the Amazon this year.

The Brazilian president told reporters he would talk to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and repeated a demand that "our dear Macron" retract remarks relating to Brazil's sovereignty over the Amazon before he would speak to him.

The acrimony sidelined a pledge of US$20 million from the Group of Seven nations to help protect rainforest in the Amazon. A letter released this week and signed by more than 500 workers from the Brazilian environmental agency IBAMA said a lack of government support had hurt their work and led to an increase in environmental crimes in the Amazon and elsewhere.

On the eve of the G7 summit last week, Macron declared the forest fires, which are also affecting Bolivia, an "international crisis" and put them on the agenda of the gathering of the rich democracies.

But above all, she said, it is "climate change that threatens the planet's equilibrium", made worse by "populist" politicians who encourage settlers in the Amazon to persist in outmoded practices such as using fires to clear land for planting.

It isn't as though Brazil, which contains 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, or other countries with smaller holdings suffer the impact of such destruction in isolation.

Son Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is a congressman, and Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo are in the US for a conversation with Trump, according to the Brazilian leader.

Almost 1,500 of the new fires were in the vast Amazon basin.

This year's total is the highest since 2010 when 132,106 fires were detected across the country.

"All of Europe, together, doesn't have any lessons to pass to us when it comes to preservation of the environment", the Brazilian president said.

Bolsonaro claimed in a live broadcast on Facebook on Thursday that 'this year's fires are below the average of recent years'.
