Chandrayaan 2: After final lunar orbit manoeuvre, ISRO readies for separation”

Former NASA astronaut Donald A Thomas Sunday said when India's second mission to the Moon Chandrayaan-2 would land on the lunar surface, everyone at the U.S. space agency and people around the world would be watching it. Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to land on the surface of the moon on September 7. A release from the national space agency ISRO says, the burn of the engine onboard the orbiter has been initiated at 6.21 pm, which lasted for 52 seconds. "The orbit achieved is 179 km x 1412 km", ISRO said in an update.

All spacecraft parameters are regular, ISRO mentioned as we speak. The lunar bound orbit maneuver began at 6:18 hrs (India Standard Time). In a major milestone for India's second Moon mission, the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft had successfully entered the lunar orbit on 20 August by performing Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) manoeuvre. If successful, Vikram lander will then be put on a separate, circular path identical to the orbiter, passing over the lunar poles at a distance of roughly 100 km from the surface.

Chandrayaan-2 will explore a region of the moon where no mission has ever set foot. The spacecraft is monitored continuously from the Mission Operations Complex at ISRO Telemetry.

Chandrayaan 2 was launched from Satish Dhawan space centre in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh by India's heavy-lift rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV Mk III) on July 22. "Not just NASA, but the whole world would be interested in knowing about the moon and the universe by following Chandrayaan -2", he said.

Chandrayaan 2 will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. The 27-kg rover, which is loaded with two payloads and has images of Tricolour and Isro logo embossed on it, will move on the lunar surface at a speed of 1cm per second.

She said that in the quiz, she was asked questions related to space and science.
